Scleroderma and Raynaud’s UK

Redesigning a website information architecture

Scleroderma and Raunaud’s UK’s website plays a vital role in providing information and support to people affected by scleroderma and Raynaud’s. We worked with the charity to refine their information architecture, using research-led insights to develop a more user-friendly navigation.

Scleroderma and Raynaud’s UK

The challenge

Scleroderma and Raynaud’s UK’s website (SRUK) had a complex structure, with their primary navigation covering a wide variety of topics catering to a diverse audience. This included the 20% of people worldwide affected by Raynaud’s and the 0.02% of people in the UK living with scleroderma.  As the website grew, it became harder for SRUK to know if the structure worked well for its users.

Our approach

We started by researching best practices in information architecture (IA). This included reviewing a wider range of comparator websites and exploring the latest thinking on topics like digital accessibility.  We revisited our earlier work with SRUK, including a rich bank of user research, drawing on both quantitative and qualitative insights to understand user needs and behaviours. By layering this with detailed website analytics, we could see how different audience groups interacted with the site and identify key pain points.

From this research, we developed two navigation concepts designed to simplify and enhance the user experience. These were put to the test with over 130 participants in a series of usability tests, focusing on clarity, ease of use, and the overall effectiveness of each structure.  The project concluded with a comprehensive recommendations report and a refined IA tailored specifically to SRUK’s users. This was further supported by signposting and SEO recommendations to improve visibility and clear user journeys.

The results

The final navigation structure provides a modern, clear, and user-focused experience, making it easier for visitors to find relevant information quickly. With improved signposting and SEO guidance, SRUK is now better positioned to serve its community and maximise the impact of its online presence.
